Our Pollarding Process

Pollarding is a pruning method that cuts back the upper branches to encourage new, manageable growth. Although it looks quite dramatic at first, this technique helps trees stay within a desired size and shape over time. It’s especially useful in gardens, streets, or other spaces where height and spread need to be controlled.

Before doing any work, we take a good look at the tree to check if pollarding is right for it. Not all trees respond well, so knowing the species and the tree’s condition makes a big difference. Some trees, like willows and limes, cope well and grow back quickly. Others may suffer if pruned too harshly.

Once we’re sure pollarding is suitable, we get to work with care and precision. We cut the tree back to a set framework, using proper techniques and clean tools to avoid shock or damage. By sticking to good timing – usually in the dormant season – we help the tree recover more easily.

Stay Safe with Pollarding

Pollarding also helps reduce risk. Heavy, unbalanced growth can become a hazard, especially in older trees. By keeping the structure in check, we lower the chance of branches snapping in high winds or bad weather. Plus, it allows more light into your garden and can encourage healthy new shoots.

After the work’s done, we always tidy up and clear away every bit of waste. You’re left with a clean, safe space and a tree ready to grow back strong.

Pollarding isn’t for every tree, but when it’s done correctly, it brings real long-term benefits. We’ve handled this kind of work for years and always treat each tree with the respect it deserves.
